The publication of the Chersonese decrees of 174 AD in honor of the procurator of Lower Moesia Titus Aurelius Calpurnian Apollonides and his wife Paulina (Decrees A and B) provoked responses from Yu. G. Vinogradov, I. S. Sventsitskaya, and A. L. Smyshlyaev(1). If the notes of the last two authors are an attempt to clarify certain issues of interpretation of the inscription, then the article by Yu.G. Vinogradov (hereinafter - Yu. V.) aims to challenge many of the publishers ' provisions - on reading the text, dating, and historical interpretation of the content. However, only a few of his corrections to the text of the inscription are justified, the rest are textually and grammatically unacceptable, which forces me to explain this, since the responsibility for publishing the inscription lies with me. There is also a need to respond to some considerations of A. L. Smyshlyaev and I. S. Sventsitskaya. In addition, over the past time, I have accumulated suggestions for improving the reading of a number of destroyed places in the inscription. Finally, it is necessary to explain a number of provisions of the first edition that were omitted due to its limited scope(2).
(1) Due to circumstances beyond my control, this work had to be divided into two parts - the textology of the inscription was developed here, and questions of interpretation of its historical content were published separately: Yaylenko V. P. On the discussion of the Chersonesus decree in honor of T. Aurelius Calpurnian Apollonides (II) / / Law and Custom of Hospitality in the ancient world. Moscow, 1999. pp. 154-176.

The main part of Yu. V. ' s article is devoted to textual analysis - reading and understanding the text of the decree; we will consider his comments to the publishers and the text proposed by him. Let me remind you beforehand that the stele with the decrees is divided into many pieces, the text is lost or destroyed in many places, especially in the first lines, as a result of which the inscription was published with methodically justified care - most of the additions were made exempli gratia or presumably (the latter are accompanied by a question mark); other possible reading and understanding options are indicated in the textual commentary the text. Moreover, due to the unsatisfactory preservation of the text, the publication is preceded by a disclaimer about possible errors. 1), which by itself meant that further work with the label was necessary.
updated text of the inscription (Jajlenko V. New decrees from Chersonesus Tauricus in honour of T. Aurelius Caplumianus Apollonides // XI Congresso intemazionale di epigrafia greca e latina. Preatti. Roma, 1997. P. 497-501) I had the opportunity to substantially refine the text and this article at the Hardt Foundation (Geneva); I take the opportunity to thank the Foundation for this in the person of its President, Prof. F. Pasha. This article was submitted to the VDI editorial office on 22.1.1997.

(7) All this is not an unfortunate mistake of my critic, but the usual method of his work with inscriptions: the text is arbitrarily restored, on the basis of which flashy constructions of the historical plan are made.
